Nirvana’s general cremation guidance describes three broad memorial paths after cremation: placing the urn in a columbarium, interring it in an urn garden, or scattering the ashes.

Sea scattering is different because the ashes cannot be recovered afterward and there is no niche, grave or defined physical place to revisit. Some families value its simplicity and connection with the sea; others may later find that a dedicated memorial place remains important for children and future generations.

The decision should therefore begin with family agreement and religious suitability before any vessel, date or ceremony is discussed.

No single practice is appropriate for every family, temple, church or denomination

Hindu Traditions

Hindu funeral traditions commonly include returning ashes to river or sea waters, while the appropriate prayers, timing and family roles vary. Confirm the rites with the family’s pandit or temple.

Buddhist, Taoist & Chinese Traditions

Some families choose scattering while others prefer a columbarium or urn garden for continued ancestral remembrance. Seek guidance from the family’s temple, adviser and elders.

Anglican & Other Christian Traditions

Some Christian communities may permit interment or scattering of ashes at sea. The family’s own church and appointed minister should confirm the current pastoral requirements.

Catholic Families

Catholic discipline does not permit the scattering of ashes at sea. Cremated remains are to be reverently laid to rest in a cemetery, columbarium or another approved sacred place. Consult the parish before deciding.

This page concerns non-Muslim cremated remains. It is not an Islamic funeral arrangement, as Islamic funeral practice requires burial rather than cremation.

Practical guidance before the family commits to a marine arrangement

Where is sea ash scattering available, and what must be prepared?哪些地点可安排海撒，需要准备什么？

Availability is not the same at every Nirvana location. The actual marine provider, departure point, waters, authority or port requirements and supporting records must be confirmed for the specific enquiry. Documents may include death and cremation records, identification, release of the ashes and authority to give instructions.

并非每个富贵地点都提供相同安排。实际船务供应者、出发码头、海域、有关单位或港口要求，以及所需文件，都须按个别咨询确认。文件可能包括死亡与火化记录、身份证明、骨灰移交文件及家属代表授权。

Can the departure date and time be guaranteed?出发日期与时间可以保证吗？

No. Thunderstorms, strong winds, wave conditions, visibility, port instructions, vessel readiness and the master’s safety assessment may require postponement, relocation or cancellation. Written contingency and rescheduling terms should be reviewed before payment.

不能保证。雷雨、强风、浪况、能见度、港口指示、船只状况及船长的安全评估，都可能导致延期、更换地点或取消。付款前应先确认书面的应变及改期条款。

How many family members may join, and is the journey suitable for everyone?可有多少位家属同行，所有人都适合登船吗？

Guest numbers depend on the vessel’s licensed capacity and the operator’s safety decision. Discuss children, older relatives, limited mobility, seasickness, boarding access and onboard facilities before confirming the trip.

同行人数取决于船只获准载客量及营运者的安全决定。确认前应说明儿童、年长家属、行动不便、晕船、登船条件及船上设施等需求。

Is sea ash scattering suitable for every religion, and will there be a physical memorial?海撒适合所有宗教吗？之后还会有固定纪念地点吗？

No. Religious practice differs: some traditions permit sea scattering, while Catholic discipline does not and it is not an Islamic funeral practice. Scattering also creates no niche, grave or recoverable resting place. Confirm faith requirements and compare a columbarium or urn garden if the family needs a defined place to revisit.

不适合所有宗教。部分传统允许海撒，但天主教现行规定不允许，这也不是伊斯兰殡葬方式。海撒后亦不会留下骨灰位、墓穴或可取回的安息地点。家属应先确认宗教要求；若需要日后可前往的固定追思地点，也应比较骨灰殿或骨灰福地。
